Tuition (English)

So you think you can learn something about photography from me? Well, firstly I’m flattered and secondly, I’m a little bit overwhelmed. And excited. I’m one of those people who gets a kick out of seeing people have “aha” moments. If I can help you to one, or even some, of those moments with your camera skills, I’ll be a very happy man.

If you've spent any time here on the website, you'll have an impression of my photography. As well as having a decent eye for composition, I have a solid understanding of how to achieve the results that I want from a photo - of how to use my camera and I'm confident I can help you do the same. If you want to grow as a landscape- or nature- photographer, there's a good chance I can help you on that journey. If you’re looking for someone to help you take great family or pet photos, I’m probably not the person you’re looking for.

This won’t be about making you a successful Instagrammer or even helping you to impress your friends with your photos (though both of these may well happen), it’s about enabling you to learn to take images that you’re happy with because at the end of the day that's what counts.

How Can I Help You?

So, what do you want to learn? What do you know already? If you want to come on a shoot, I’ll send you a short questionnaire so that I can get a feeling for where you are and what I can help you with.

Be thinking about things such as what frustrates you about your own photos, what techniques would you like to learn. What’s important to you about photography.

What You Will Need To Bring

  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn. They’re the most important things.

  • A camera, preferably one with program, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual modes. You should be familiar with its use.

  • A sufficiently solid tripod.

  • Appropriate outdoor gear for a day out in the mountains according to the day’s conditions (shoes, clothing, water and food)

  • A sense of humour and the willingness to get down in the mud!

What You Should Expect

Unless you have a specific plan in mind, my recommendation would be that we head down to the mountains to somewhere like Hinterstein and simply head up the trail. Tuition will normally involve a whole day spent in the wilds, so you'll need to be at least a little bit fit, though we will be stopping regularly for photos. Rather than classroom tuition, it will all be out in the field (or forest😉) showing you optimal camera settings as we go for the compositions as we find them. We'll discuss what makes good photos, what constitutes good and bad lighting (and why bright sunlight isn't always the best), how to separate subject matter from its environment to draw the viewer's eye to where you want it and how to use lines in a photo to do the same.

We’ll also talk about some differences between your eyes and your camera and why something that looks good doesn’t always yield a great photo.

Tuition (Deutsch)

Was möchtest du überhaupt lernen? Was weißt du schon?

Was du Mitbringen Sollst

Was du Erwarten Kannst

Consultation & Collaboration

If you are an existing photography workshop or group leader and you want to run a workshop in central Europe, but aren't sure where to start, I may be able to help. As well as running my own workshops, I am available to consult and advise other leaders wishing to do the same. I have extensive first hand knowledge of much of the Eastern Alps and am very familiar with the Dolomites in northern Italy, the Allgäu region of southern Germany, the Alpstein mountains of north-eastern Switzerland and much of western Slovenia. My native language is English, but I am effectively bilingual in German as well. Furthermore, I am familiar with the infrastructure of the mountains and where the best areas are.

As well as being availale for consultation, from mid-2028 I will be able to help run workshops as a co-leader if wanted. At one time I was qualified by the German Alpine Association (DAV) as a hiking guide. Although my qualification has formally lapsed and I am no longer permitted to advertise myself as a guide, almost 40 years of travel in the Alps (including climbing to their highest point) have given me a wealth of mountain experience that would be at your disposal.

The first 30 min of any telephone consultation are free, after that I charge €40/h (broken down to the nearest 15 min). That should give you enough time to determine whether or not I'm going to be worth the investment. For co-leading workshops I charge €250/day plus expenses. Get in touch via the contact button to arrange a consultation.

Please be aware that the lead time for organising a workshop in the Alps can be as much as a year, particularly for popular areas such as the Dolomites, so get in touch in good time!
